If you have ever visited South Korea, you will have noticed a coffee shop on virtually every corner of the street, and if there isn't then each convenience store is highly stocked with various coffees. So why is coffee so popular in Korea? As a proud Brit, I have always been raised with a "cup of tea" and like most Brits, after a long day, or when you feel stressed a cup of tea is a way to take some time out and gather your thoughts. However, in the UK, coffee culture is slowly growing. When I moved to Korea, I was really surprised how many coffee shops there were. I recently read that there is over 100,000 coffee shops in Korea, from big chains like Starbucks, to smaller local chains or one off stores. Whenever I am in downtown, I tend to be only a couple of meters away from a coffee shop. Most of the coffee shops also offer a very competitive price, typically around 1,500 KRW (USD 1.09) for a take out, or for a bigger chain around 5,000 KRW (USD 3.60) . Which for me is a really good price. Let's check out why coffee culture is so big in Korea! Most Koreans that I have met, always love to drink coffee, even in the evening or with food. Every time I have experienced this, I have been left with questions, like, "Surley it's too late to drink coffee?" "Why are you drinking coffee with food?" But, I always get told the same answer, that its a "sociable drink", as well as remaining a trend. I have also noticed, and I am sure that you have too, that coffee shops in Korea, tend to offer a variety of items on their menu, but even more than that, the coffee shops also offer different levels of seating, from study zones, to "no kids zones", or even private booths. In my time in Korea, I have also visited many pet theme, or character theme coffee shops too which for me, helps boost the trend and coffee culture in Korea. I for sure recommend if you have not done so already, signing up to many of the coffee shop apps, or rewards cards, as they offer free coffees, exclusive benefits and sometimes event offers on their products. Which of course keep me coming back for more. I am not here to say whether Korean coffee is good or bad – it can be either-or. What I want to look at is the culture itself. What is it all about? How did it happen? Why does it even exist? If you haven't read our article on the history of coffee in South Korea, read it here! This is why cafés are the "go-to spot" I must begin this by saying that in Korea, everything passes as a café. While a café is typically a store that primarily sells coffee, this is a bit different in Korea. Rather, the word ‘café’ in Korea refers more to a meeting place. Many "cafés" even seem to serve drinks as an afterthought. Without a doubt, since I moved to Korea, I consume heaps more coffee than I once did, and it has sneakily added itself into my daily routine. But why not!? As the country welcomes the most festive time of the year, the Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines (KCC) and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) proudly present ‘ Light the Season: A Korea-Philippines Lantern Display ’, running from December 2, 2025 to January 6, 2026 at the façade and lobby of the NCCA building in Intramurals and at the ground floor of the KCC in Taguig. The display celebrates the Philippines’ iconic Christmas traditions through a vibrant display of parol and Jinju silk lanterns, highlighting the rich craftsmanship and cultural heritage shared by both countries. Bringing back the enchantment of the ‘Lights of Korea: Jinju Silk Lanterns’ exhibition, which ran from May to July this year at KCC, this showcase once again exhibits the exquisite artistry of lanterns crafted from fine Korean silk originating from Jinju in Gyeongsangnam-do Province . Each piece offers a captivating interplay of light, color, and tradition, embodying the timeless beauty of Korea’s lantern-making heritage. Complementing these are iconic Filipino parols - a cherished symbol of Christmas. Traditionally shaped like a star, the parol decorates homes, streets, and communities across the Philippines during the holiday season. Its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and handcrafted details reflect the festive warmth of the Filipino people. While NCCA Deputy Executive Director for Operations Bernan Joseph Corpuz shared “the idea of collaborating the Jinju silk lantern with parol now came to life, and it truly offers us a glimpse of continued partnership between Korea and the Philippines”. The ceremony was further enriched by a Pansori (Korean traditional singing) and Gayageum (Korean traditional string instrument) performance featuring traditional Korean pieces as well as a Christmas song, setting a festive atmosphere. Flying 5,500 miles from Incheon to London Heathrow — here is Dojeon Media's team member, Lewis' honest take on the food, comfort, and service. Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper I have flown Korean Air twice before; however, that was a few years ago. Since Korean Air was voted one of the best airlines in recent years, and because I had previously flown with them, I was curious to see if they lived up to their reputation, so I boarded an almost 14-hour flight from Incheon to London Heathrow. Price Comparisons Despite being at a higher price point than the new Virgin Atlantic flight operating the same route between Incheon and London Heathrow—because I flew from Daegu with a connecting flight in Incheon on both legs of my trip—flying with Korean Air made much more sense. If you are flying between Korea and the UK, there are airlines at a lower price point, although they do involve layovers rather than the direct route that Korean Air offered. This direct route made the journey worthwhile, especially when it came to having a lot of luggage, as it was checked in at Daegu and not collected again until I arrived in London. Economy Seats & Comfort Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper The economy seat offered a great amount of legroom and enough pitch to keep my legs from feeling cramped during the long journey. What I really loved was the adjustable headrest and solid cushion support, which made catching a few hours of sleep remarkably easy. Not to mention the small touches, like the blanket, slippers, bottle of water, and plug-in headphones, which allowed me to watch movies. The 3-3 configuration was used throughout economy class, while right at the back there were two rows in a 2-2 configuration, which I selected on my return flight. Despite the long journey to London, the flight felt surprisingly relaxing and easy on the body. Thoughtful cabin temperature control and well-maintained amenities made settling in for the long haul completely stress-free, and it is one that I would recommend. Service Compared to Middle Eastern airlines, I was not expecting too much in terms of service from Korean Air. However, the cabin crew on both my outward and return journeys delivered warm, seamless service throughout the entire flight. Every request I made was met with a genuine smile, which made the long-haul flight feel much more premium than my economy class seat would suggest. Entertainment Setback Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper This is what set Korean Air back, despite their service and value for money. Most other long-haul airlines have hundreds of movies and TV shows to choose from; however, Korean Air only offered a handful of films and TV shows to watch. Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper Despite this, the seatback screen featured different genres of movies and TV shows in multiple languages, and real-time flight tracking, which I used to keep myself occupied. There was also the option to purchase inflight Wi-Fi under a number of bundles. I opted for the USD 6 package, which offered messaging for the full flight. You could also opt for the USD 21 package, which included the option to send photos and watch YouTube. The internet was fast and appeared to be in real time, which was amazing! Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper Food and Meal Service The meal service was also a highlight, as all of the meals I had were of good quality and offered a varied selection. As I checked in on the mobile app before taking my flights, I was able to view the menu for my trip. On the way to the UK, I opted for the beef stew, and on my return flight, I chose the beef goulash, despite their famous bibimbap also being an option. All of the meals I had tasted remarkably fresh, even at 35,000 feet. Korean Air - Incheon - London Heathrow (return) - Lewis Hooper If that was not enough, there were also plenty of snacks at the back of the plane, ranging from soft drinks and juices to alcoholic beverages like beer and wine. Throughout both flights, tubs of Pringles, chocolate pies, and even a selection of sandwiches were offered. Every side dish and snack served throughout the long-haul flight was thoughtfully prepared and genuinely delicious. He takes a cyanide pill in the middle of the courtroom and is rushed to the hospital. Later that evening, Young Woo is still shaken up from the events that took place in the courtroom. The two finally clear the air as to why Young Woo decided to break up with Joon Ho after hearing what his sister had said during their lunch together. In the final scene of episode 15, we find out the real hacker is Tae Soo Mi's son, Choi Sang Hyeon (Choi Hyun Jin The King of Pigs 2022)! As the final episode unfolds, we are led deeper into Young Woo's family and her personal relationships. Due to her running for the Minister of Justice position, Tae Soo Mi tells her son that she will cover up his wrongdoings and move on. Meanwhile, Attorney Jung is in the hospital recovering from his surgery and makes amends with his ex-wife, Choi Ji Soo (Lee Yoon Ji The 3rd Charm 2018) pondering quitting Hanbada. Meanwhile, Young Woo receives shocking news from her father that the CEO, Tae Soo Mi (Jin Kyung Melancholia 2021) of Taesin, Hanbada's rival law firm is her biological mother. The guilt that Sang Hyeon feels is unbearable as he runs to Young Woo to confess his deeds. He tells Young Woo that he is her half-brother and that their mother is planning on ignoring his hacking of Raon to pursue her dreams of becoming the Minister of Justice. Sang Hyeon reveals that the partner and interim CEO of Raon, Kim Chan Hong, devised a plan to usurp the company in order to remind his partner In Cheol of the reason why they started the company. He asks Sang Hyeon to steal their users' personal information, but Sang Hyeon refuses and encrypts the data. During the trial, there is a board meeting within Raon to remove Chan Hong from his CEO duties after finding out what he did through Sang Hyeon's testimony. As the case closes, Joon Ho and Young Woo rush to the National Assembly to alert Tae Soo Mi to resign from running for the Minister of Justice. While in the car, Joon Ho professes his love for Young Woo like an "unrequited love for a cat"! The two agree to continue to see each other as Young Woo rushes into the building to talk to Soo Mi. During their conversation, Young Woo tells Soo Mi that she knows that Soo Mi is her birth mother and that she should take more care in raising Sang Hyeon. Soo Mi is ridden with guilt and decides to step down from running for the Ministry of Justice position. The series finally comes to a feel-good close as Woo Young Woo and Lee Joon Ho are back together dating again! We are sad to see this series come to an end! Seoul authorities have found toxic substances in fast fashion online retailers Shein and Temu products, and have set out on a crackdown of importations. Here are the details and our thoughts. With many people moving to fast fashion as a cheaper and more convenient way to shop and show off the latest trends, this has caused big market players such as SHIEN and TEMU to throw out thousands of new designs for both men and women to buy. These latest fashion items are sold very cheaply, making them great for one-time wear. This, however, has caused many environmental concerns from protesters and even the consumers. Recently, it came to light that some of the w omen's accessories sold contained toxic substances, some of which included hundreds of times above acceptable levels, authorities in Seoul announced. To dive into more detail, shoes from Shein were found to contain significantly high levels of phthalates -- chemicals used to make plastics more flexible -- with one pair 229 times above the legal limit. "Phthalate-based plasticizers affect reproductive functions such as sperm count reduction, and can cause infertility and even premature birth," an official from Seoul's environmental health team announced in an interview. One such chemical "is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Cancer Institute, so special care should be taken to avoid long-term contact with the human body", they added. Formaldehyde, a chemical commonly used in home building products, was detected. For me when I heard this news, I have to say that I was not surprised at all. Pushing out fast fashion, and with some of (if not all of the clothing lines) produced in terrible working conditions in third world countries where there are little to no 'health and safety' standards of course there will be an issue with leaked chemicals. Do I think this will put their consumers off of buying their products? No! I sadly do not think it will make a difference to them what so ever, which then leads to SHIEN and TEMU getting away with having no final standards or checks on their products. My family members and I, have purchased items from SHEIN before, and have been really impressed with the quality of the item, since the price was so low and the item arrived in a matter of days, unlike some of SHEINS competitors. For the Seoul authorities, I believe that destroying and removing these harmful items is the right thing to do, however, I really do not think it will be enough, and merely a dent in the ocean floor on this occasion.
