If you know you know! Singles Inferno 3 has been immensely popular this season with its viewership currently standing at 71 million hours globally within just four weeks (Korea JoongAng Daily). In this article, we discuss Singles Inferno Season 3 and how Korean social standards influenced the overall interactions between contestants and the results of the show. If you haven’t read our previous singles inferno articles you can do so HERE . Let’s get into it! First off, a question we asked ourselves while watching Season 3 was, “would it just be better to leave alone?” This is of course coming from a cultural perspective but if we look further into it we can see the reasons for some questionable actions as a reflection of Korean society. Gwan Hee and his antics Surprisingly for us, Gwan Hee was not who we thought would have so many of the contestants attention. He’s intriguing for sure, but after how he acted we were surprised to see how many women were still interested in him despite his behavior on the show. It made us question the intentions of the women who were after him, is it simply that it was a dating show and they wanted to pursue their interest in him or was it perhaps that they really didn’t want to be left alone on the island on account of what people would think of them after the show had ended. Harsh Society Korean society is very status oriented and appearances are almost everything. You can see this in recent events with Lee Sun Kyun's death and how you present yourself in the public eye and in society is so important. It’s an also somewhat harsh society so judgements are passed easily and without much thought for the feelings of the other person. For instance, in this show with Gwan Hee and Hye Seon it seems as if she was acting on her feelings but after how Gwan Hee acted, a lot of us would have preferred she left alone or didn’t choose him. This is because she really seemed to know her worth, but we respect her choice regardless. Another contestant that appeared this way was Gyuri, despite being interested in Min Woo more than Min Kyu, she left the show with Min Kyu after she was quite rude to Min Woo and wanted to essentially control his actions to choose her. Korean social standards and practices really shine through in Singles Inferno and other Korean reality shows . We’ve seen it before in the previous seasons for example, where Moon Se Hoon was very persistent towards pursuing Shin Ji Yeon. Western audiences saw it as "creepy" or "forceful" but Korean audiences saw it as "romantic", "loyal" and "persistent". How deeply is "society" embedded in us? So our main question is “is it that they really liked the person they left with, or was it simply that they didn’t want to appear “rejected” or not chosen? Korean society firmly stands on societal acceptance, so it’s hard to tell what’s genuine and what’s not in this type of show. I mean of course, even the want to be accepted is genuine but it’s also very strongly influenced by a judgmental and harsh society. So is it really us or is it society or both? Riding high as this winter's most popular drama, Na In Woo proves that he is not the second lead! In a drunken stupor, Ji Won spills that she had just lost her father in March earlier that year and had just broken up with her boyfriend. (By the way, we love Park Min Young's drunken acting! By far, one of the most convincing "drunk" people on the K-drama screen!) In a heartfelt moment, the two dispel each other, their feelings, and inner thoughts together throughout the night. Ji Hyeok finds out the next day that Ji Won is an upperclassman at the same university. He begins to help Ji Won take care of a kitten, without her knowledge and the two begin to share an unbreakable bond. The two are then reunited six years later in 2011 as Ji Won is introduced to Ji Hyeok's team at U&K Food where he was the General Manager. Looking back at all his missed opportunities to tell Ji Won his feelings, Ji Hyeok vows to make the most out of his present chances! Ji Won isn't the only person time-traveling! In a shocking twist, the storyline has brought us to believe that Ji Hyeok is also traveling back in time after a car accident! At the end of episode 4, we come to find out that whoever dies and comes back to life receives a blue heart on their body. It turns out that Ji Hyeok also has one on his collar! An unexpected character shocks us! We also are introduced more in-depth about Yoo Hui Yeon ( Choi Gyu Ri ). It turns out that although Ji Won thinks that she is Ji Hyeok's girlfriend, after seeing them come out of a boutique together, the opposite is even more shocking! Yoo Hui Yeon is actually Yoo Ji Hyeok's little sister! (No wonder she was able to buy all that designer jewelry and bags at the beginning of the series!) Ji Won unlocks her past, Pandora's Box is opened! After meeting her high school crush, Baek Eun Ho ( Lee Gi Kwang from the K-pop group Highlight ), she asks him out to dinner and shows her the note that she "allegedly" wrote back in high school rejecting him. It turns out that it was her best friend, Jung Soo Min ( Song Ha Yoon Oh! Young Sim 2023), who forged her handwriting. Ji Won also finds out that it was Ji Hyeok who made Eun Ho go to her high school reunion! Ji Hyeok to the rescue...again? After having wine with Eun Ho, Ji Won walks home but is met with a jealous boyfriend, Park Min Hwan. After being told by Soo Min earlier that Ji Won's mother had an affair, Min Hwan assumes that she is seeing another man. Just when he grabs her arm and is about to hurt her our hero Ji Hyeok swoops in and throws him to the ground! He confessed! Through a misunderstanding that Yoo Hui Yeon is Yoo Ji Hyeok's girlfriend, Ji Hyeok confesses his long-suppressed feelings for Ji Won! (Our hearts exploded in satisfaction!) If you haven't read Part 1 - this is the follow-up! This article was written up till episode 9! A little retrospective for ya! Min Woo - we are hoping that the relationship with Si Eun will bloom a little more but after his date with Gyu Ri we are not sure. Min Woo still seems to have his eyes on Si Eun but it seems a little cloudy after his date with Gyu Ri who has been a little back and forth with Min Woo as well! Si Eun - aside from the girls' ridiculous comments about their appearances, in terms of heart, Si Eun's feelings for Min Woo seem to be the purest that we can see on the show. Their romance developed quite naturally and their conversation and vibe together are so calm and blissful, we thought that these two had great potential as a couple and we are hoping that they will get a chance to blossom a little more without Gyu Ri in the middle of it. Won Ik - honestly, is it just us or does he look a little like V from BTS ? Won Ik seems lovely, he's just a little quiet and we don't see him making "moves" per se. He stands out athletically more than people would have expected which is wonderful, we just don't see him connecting that deeply with anyone on the show at the moment. Maybe he's just having a chill island break which is cool too. Min Kyu - his feelings still stand strong for Gyu Ri and in our opinion, they match very well together and the way he looks at Gyu Ri, a lot of people have felt the butterflies for her. Gyu Ri does not seem 100% into him though so we will have to see how this plays out! Ha Bin - Ha Bin is not living up to his full potential on this show, he's a little quirky and we love that but it seems his expression of interest to Ha Jeong did not go as well as expected as Ha Jeong is still very fixated on Gwan Hee. Fun fact about Ha Bin - he's currently a character on the show My Demon ! Ha Jeong - have you ever had a crush on someone that you don't really want to have a crush on but it takes time to maybe let go of those feelings? That's what we feel for Ha Jeong and her interest in Gwan Hee. She was very upset at the way he expressed his interest in three women at the same time which is totally understandable and we thought she and Hye Seon were over him and ready to move on but both still seem to have lingering feelings for Gwan Hee despite Gwan Hee not reciprocating. We are proud of Ha Jeong for expressing her feelings honestly to Gwan Hee so she wouldn't "regret" but we just wish she would have had someone more into her! Min Young - this girl is also another who appeared a little wishy-washy. She kept claiming that when on her date with Jin Seok in the pool it was a very "brother-sister" interaction but we don't know which siblings would ever interact like that, ever . Their date was very romantic and she was instigating a lot but then appeared to change her mind when she came back to the island. Jin Seok I guess took her actions as her being really into him and decided he would stick to her until she decided to give out four candies to other men which made him question her intentions. She is now very "into" Jin Seok only because he has caught the interest of Min Ji and went to paradise. Since Jin Seok is now pulling away she is clinging on more and making her situation a little worse but let's see how this will play out! Jin Seok - Perhaps our favorite guy on the show so far, Jin Seok expressed his feelings for Min Young initially but then changed after she expressed interest in other men. He changed a finally let go when he interacted more with Min Ji, the latest addition to the group. We can see a little confusion between them, as Min Young clings closer to Jin Seok, he pulls away but Min Ji shows her interest as well - we are CONFUSED . We are not sure how this will play out - Jin Seok seems interested in both girls despite telling Min Ji that he didn't have anyone he was interested in anymore, referring to Min Young. He still winks at her though and Min Ji still seems to be assessing her options! We have no clue with this one. Min Ji - the latest addition to the group who went on a two-man date with Min Woo and Jin Seok in which she seemingly showed more interest in Jin Seok but when she returned to the island the interest did seem to shift to Gwan Hee. Since she is a newcomer we don't really know where her true feelings lie! I guess we will have to wait to find out! Our thoughts This season has been all over the place, some scenes making us smile with cuteness, some making us roll our eyes, and some making us yawn, we're not sure this season is capturing the essence of Singles Inferno but hey, we have two more episodes to go! We're hoping for a little more excitement and perhaps a little more continuity and romance! Also, like the judges said can Ha Bin and Won Ik just go on a bromance trip to paradise? As you may know already Singles Inferno Season 3 is out and it's wilding! If you don't know about it yet, don't worry! We've got you covered check out our article HERE . Changed rules, changed locations, TWO infernos, and more! Seven episodes have now been released and we are currently waiting for the last two to air and see the show's results! For us, Season 3 seems more like a group of friends hanging out on an island. There are some aspects or prospects of romance but romance does not seem like the central focus. It seems more like a competition for attention rather than to find a genuine connection with another person. More increasingly we see as well people not expressing their emotions and with two episodes left we can't help but wonder if there will be people who don't want to choose any of the other contestants. What has made this season interesting is the change in the rules and dynamics of the show, for instance, the two-hell plotline and sudden launches to paradise. Here's a brief update on all the contestants so far: Hye Seon - Our favorite girl so far, she seems the most natural and laidback. She appears to still be unsure but also perhaps stuck on Gwan Hee. We are proud of her for branching out and trying to talk to the other men but she doesn't seem to be clicking with the others at this stage and the confusion caused by Gwan Hee after their first trip to paradise may be the reason for this. Gwan Hee - a lot of the viewers of this show have mixed opinions about Gwan Hee. Half think he's insanely attractive and half not at all. For us, the way Gwan Hee expressed his interest in three women at the same time threw us off, and his constant confusion about who he would choose made him seem very wishy-washy. He expresses himself differently in the group vs. when he is being interviewed on the camera alone and it seems awkward for any of the girls he has shown interest in if they watch it again and see what he has said about them and his interest in them. He starts to take care of Hye Seon a little during the girl's competition but again we're not sure because he also has the heart of Ha Jeong. Gyu Ri - This girl didn't appear to have the best attitude initially, the way she interacts on camera makes you wonder if her intentions are true. It seems like Gyu Ri has a bit of interest in Min Woo at the moment but it's clear that Min Kyu is very interested in her but she is not maybe that interested in him. I think what the contestants express on camera both with the group and privately is very different from what's going on in their heads.
