- Exploring the Enigmatic: Unique Daily Korean Rituals and Traditions That Define Culture [Part 2]
In Part 1 of this series, we explored three Korean traditions that are uniquely Korean! You may have seen some of these in K-Dramas, films, or other K-content. In this article, we explore two more Korean traditions and what makes them special! If you haven't yet read Part 1, you can do so HERE ! Let's start! 1. Drinking Magkeolli after Climbing a Mountain This one may not be as common as some of the traditions covered in Part 1, but did you know that some Koreans drink Magkeolli (Rice Wine) after climbing a mountain? I learned this while hiking a mountain near Seoul named Bukhansan . At first, I thought why? It seems like a random tradition, but as I was climbing the mountain I understood. Just kidding. The physical intensity of climbing the mountain was not the reason why Koreans drank after climbing. Some of the reasons that came up were: To celebrate the success of climbing the mountain To have a refreshing drink To socialize with food and drink It's just something they do 2. Calling Men "ahjusshi" (군인 아저씨) during Military Service We've discussed the matter of mandatory military service in Korea before concerning the K-Drama D.P. In that article, you can read more about the real experiences of men in the Korean military. If you'd like to read it click HERE . Something you may not know is that during mandatory service Korean men can be referred to as "soldier ahjusshi" ( 군인 아저씨 ), which is typically used to address adult men and is used by those younger than that person. If you're a K-Drama fan you would know that this term is typically used for middle-aged men, so you're probably wondering why a 20-something-year-old would be called "ahjusshi" during their military service. Here are some of the reasons we could find: It's a sign of respect and age - reaching a certain level of maturity It's symbolic of them taking part and completing their military service (especially while wearing uniform) and now bestowing upon them a patriotic responsibility for their country It depicts a transition to adulthood - since mandatory military service is not easy to endure, it would really make a man out of those who go (sorry I was thinking of Mulan) It shows a connection to those who served alongside you - an equal level and sense of camaraderie There are many reasons why the term "ahjusshi" is used for men who have completed their military service. However, on a completely different note, I know there can be a certain stigma and negative connotation that comes with the words "ahjusshi" and especially "ahjumma". This year in March, there was a stabbing on a train in South Korea because someone called a lady "ahjumma", well that's all we know of the case at the moment. You can read more about that HERE . On a lighter note, you can see some Korean people's responses to younger men being called "ahjusshi" as part of a prank on YouTube below. You can see how the word may hold different meanings to people and how significant the topic of age is here. If you have an interest in Korean culture, K-Drama, etc. you may have noticed the very specific things that Koreans do on a regular basis. These small tidbits of life have just become that, part of life, something that's just become normal. What might seem unusual to those outside Korea, are just everyday habits for the Koreans! What do you think about the traditions above? Comment below! #klife #korea #southkorea #seoul #koreanculture #lifestyle #dp1 #dp2 #ajusshi #makgeolli
- [Spoilers Ep 6!] Castaway Diva: Will the real Ki Ho please stand up?
If you've been watching the latest Park Eun Bin drama Castaway Diva on Netflix you will also be scratching your head a little wondering which of the two brothers is the real Ki Ho. Spoilers ahead! Ki Ho or not? At first glance, you would think N also known as Cha Hak Yeon is Jung Ki Ho. His character Kang Woo Hak, seems the most plausible for the moment as the real Ki Ho, because of the very obvious matching physical feature he has to the young Ki Ho, which is his glasses. As we continue to watch, you can't help but feel that something feels amiss about Kang Woo Hak as Ki Ho, he does seem to have a connection to Mok Ha and he did just regain his memories about his youth but the details still seem fuzzy. In that scene where their father picks up the chair to hit Ki Ho, we see Kang Bo Gul (or so we think) played by Chae Jeong Hyeop protect his brother by getting in between Ki Ho and his father, so at this point in the drama we feel as though it is at a 50/50 stage with both brothers because as much as we're guessing it's Kang Bo Gul who is Ki Ho, we never really know with K-Dramas do we? Kang Bo Gul's Chemistry with Mok Ha: Is he Ki Ho or is this just second male lead syndrome? If you don't know what second male lead syndrome is let us teach ya! It can also be when you want the second male lead to end up with the main female lead but as we know that doesn't ever usually happen. RIP the Han Seo Jun ship. We're still not over that. For us, the chemistry between Bo Gul and Mok Ha has been stronger than that of her with Woo Hak. The way Bo Gul ran to Mok Ha's rescue when he found out that she had received flowers from "Ki Ho" and realized that it was someone trying to harm her because HE IS THE REAL KI HO, or so we are guessing at this point. The way he watches her, and in some ways tries to show that he doesn't like her but secretly cares for and protects her, we're feeling that male lead love syndrome as well! Since the scene where Bo Gul puts shoes on Mok Ha we started to get either he is Ki Ho or this is going to be the second male lead syndrome again. The suspense is killing us! What do you think? Who do you think the real Ki Ho is? Let us know in the comments! #castawaydiva #kdrama #parkeunbin #seoul #whoiskiho
- HORI7ON Updates: What Have Our Boys Been Up to After Their Debut?
“Perfection is like chasing the HORI7ON . Keep moving.” (Neil Gaiman) And so they are! As we all know, Korea’s first all-Filipino K-pop boy group debuted and released their first album ‘Friend-SHIP’ last week! Let’s see where they have been performing and what they’ve been up to since then. Performance videos, our highlights, and fan reactions are included! Here are 7 places HORI7ON has been after their debut! 1. MNET - HORI7ON performed their title song “SIX7EEN” Our highlights: HORI7ON always brings an infectious energy to every stage they perform on. A few highlights for us were the close-ups and being able to see the expressions of the members, Kim's low "break it down" and Kyler's mysterious, dark, and handsome anime-boy vibe. Love it! Fan comments: 2. Arirang Korea - HORI7ON performed "SIX7EEN" at Simply K-pop CON-TOUR Our highlights: Ok, but how about these new sleek outfits? They look so good! Reyster's eye contact and suave at the start of the performance drew me in even though I have watched many performances of "SIX7EEN". I'm not getting tired of the song! The outfit winner for me in this video was...drum roll, please...Vinci! I was loving the gingham jacket! I also loved the ending fairies! So cute. Fan comments: 3. KBS WORLD TV Music Bank - HORI7ON performs "SIX7EEN" Our highlights: Winston's vocals stood out for me in this video as well as Kyler's green and black striped jacket and Marcus' cute green ruffles. Jeromy's visuals and expressions made the song fun and youthful and those ending fairies - I don't know him personally but Reyster seems a little cheeky. What do you think? You can definitely see the growth and confidence in the boys as they keep performing! Fan comments: 4. Album Un-boxing - 'HORI7ON' Official Youtube Our highlights: Personally, I liked the "dreamy" album concept. Which one did you like? I like how they explained what was given to us in the album and also that there were solo songs on the album too! Make sure to check out all their songs and share your feedback with us. Also, as Marcus said: "Please play it [Friend-SHIP] on your CD player, your car, your everything or eat it and it'll play through your mouth. I'm kidding! Don't eat it. Please don't eat it." Fan comments: 5. Dance practice - 'HORI7ON' Official Youtube Our highlights: Once again the energy is always high! It's also great to see them in a dance practice room. The video looks professional and was filmed quite well. The boys look great! Fan Comments: 6. Fancam: Music Core Our highlights: Shining like angels in all-white outfits, bright colors, and confetti! Need I say more? Fan comments: 7. M2 Relay Dance Our highlights: I really love Relay Dances and this one shows a fun and happy side to the boys as well and shared teamwork and just a real joy for what they do. Kim stood out to me here with his dancing and cute heart hands! The dancing was so good and it was good to see them have fun and be playful! Fan comments: Wow! HORI7ON has done a lot in a week and the videos in this article are not even EVERYTHING they've done this week! I feel so proud of them and as you've read, many of the fans are too! Keep going HORI7ON ! Anchors love you! What was your favorite performance? Also, which album concept did you like? Comment below! #HORI7ON #KPOP #FRIENDSHIP #ANCHORS
- Nam Joo Hyuk faces off with his protégé in latest episodes of "Vigilante"
Already adapted to the vigilante by night and police academy student by day, Nam Joo Hyuk's new action/thriller Vigilante throws us for a spin as he meets his admirer who takes it too far! We break down what happened and why you should be watching this amazing drama! *Spoilers! Plagued with "Vigilante fever" the whole city becomes rampant with copycat "enforcers" with citizens taking the law into their own hands by punishing criminals they deem fit. The media is thrown into a frenzy as determined reporter, Choi Mi Ryeo ( Kim So Jin Marriage Contract 2016), vows to capture the vigilante for her show no matter what the cost. A new case of a truck driver, Choi Gyu Ho, running over a deliveryman caused a stir among the public as his menial prison sentence of 14 months made people uncomfortable and questioned the law. Kim Ji Yong ( Nam Joo Hyuk ) follows him, but it's not clear if he does anything, yet. Another case of a driver, Jang Soon Do, hitting an old lady causes the brother of the suspect to take revenge on the old woman by going to her house and rudely demanding her to settle the terms under the table. The Vigilante meets his protégé As the reckless driver, Jang Soon Do, is hospitalized for his wounds from his fight with a local who saw what happened when he tried to run over the old woman, Ji Yong arrives at the hospital waiting to take action, but is too late. Another masked vigilante is there first and steals an ambulance. The masked vigilante knows Ji Yong's name and finally stops the ambulance on a rooftop where the two face off. The masked vigilante wants to "join hands and fight crime together", but Ji Yong denies his wish. The two spar but seems like Ji Yong has the upper hand, this time. The ending of episode four makes us question whether the police officers in this drama are two-faced. Kim Ji Yong is the vigilante, of course, so he has a nice guy persona during the day and a dark demeanor at night. On the other hand, another police officer, Jo Heon ( Yoo Ji Tae Money Heist: Korea 2022), uses his size and brute force as intimidation to get the information he needs from suspects. Should the police be allowed to do this? We want to leave it up to you for this discussion! Comment your thoughts on this drama! #vigilante #namjoohyuk #disneyplusdrama #kimsojin #marriagecontract

- The finale of Shin Ha Kyun's "Evilive" will shock you! Why this drama is one of the best this fall!
What happens when the evil you swore to get rid of is the very thing that destroys you? Shin Ha Kyun's most recent crime/ thriller Evilive wasn't the most popular drama this fall, but we'll show you why it should be! Wrapping up its 10-episode run on November 13, 2023, ENA 's Evilive proved that even a not-so-popular drama can catch attention when you have a master actor at the helm in Shin Ha Kyun . As we revealed in our last post, Shin Ha Kyun was brilliant in his portrayal of a small-town detective in Beyond Evil (2021), and his style and character development are seen here in his new role as a struggling lawyer trying to make ends meet. We don't want to spoil too much for you, but we want to share why we loved this drama! 1. We all give in to temptation, but to what extent? Disgusted with himself before he met baseball player turned crime lord, Seo Do Young ( Kim Young Kwang ), Han Dong Soo ( Shin Ha Kyun ) is given an opportunity he can't refuse. To the extent of losing the ones he loves, Dong Soo is faced with some terrible decisions that will plague the morally conscious: make a little money, but live a righteous life, or make a lot of money, but live as a criminal. It was a pleasure to watch Shin Ha Kyun's character struggle with these inner thoughts as he navigates the safety of his family and himself out of the reaches of Seo Do Young. In the end, we finally find out what decision he has chosen, and it will shock you! 2. What causes a good-hearted lawyer to turn bad? At the beginning of the series, Han Dong Soo is seen as a kind and gentle family man. He provides for his wife and daughter and takes care of his younger brother Han Beom Jae ( Shin Jae Ha Taxi Driver 2 2023). But what happens to his personality and thinking as he is faced with so much money and power? As he partners up with crime lord Seo Do Young, we can see him struggling with his inner morals. This is very intriguing to watch and makes this series a winner! 3. The ending will shock you! We're glad that this drama ended with only 10 episodes since it was packed with thrilling relationships, backstabbing, and tons of concealment! Every episode was an intense edge-of-your-seat type of drama that had us wanting more! The finale throws everyone for a loop as it ends in a shocker that you must see! Comment below with your thoughts on this underrated drama! What did you like about it? What did you dislike? We want to hear from you! #evilive #enadrama #taxidriver2 #shinjaeha #kimyoungkwang

- Jessi's "Gum": A Flavorful Hit and Her Resounding Impact on K-Pop
Queen Jessi is back with popping beats and bubblegum treats in her new song "Gum"! With the release of her new single "Gum" Jessi continues to step outside the K-pop box and present not only her unique style but a sense of freedom in unapologetically being herself! "Gum" was released on 25th October, 2023. If you haven't seen or heard it yet, check it out below: "Gum" Music Video "Gum" In her own words about "Gum" Jessi says "the people who get it, get it." (Jessi, NME) This isn't the first time Jessi has stepped outside the boundaries of the K-Pop world. It's definitely part of her brand to be confident, sexy, provocarive and just "Jessilicious"! In her interview with NME, she said that her lyrics are generally PG but usually have a double meaning to it. This is what she said about it: “If you listen to all my music, there’s double meanings in every song, it’s just not in your face. I’m not that type. I’ll keep the lyrics very PG, very ear-friendly, but there’s a lot of subliminal messages in there. If you listen to ‘Gum, gum, gum’ , it sounds like a different word. The way I spelt the G for ‘Gum’, it doesn’t look like ‘gum’ at first glance. If you watch the video, like I said, there’s a lot of moments where you see me showing the actions. I know the people who get it, get it. But if you sum it down, ‘Gum’ pretty much just means that we all have different flavours.” (NME) You can check out the full interview article HERE . How Jessi Impacts and Stands Out in the K-pop Industry It's pretty obvious Jessi stands out when it comes to the K-Pop world. As we know most of Jessi's songs portray a strong and seductive feminine power, which wasn't so common in the K-Pop world. Jessi has a very charismatic personality, her vocals and rapping are more out there than the usual reserved image that we see from many K-Pop idols. Jessi is not afraid to speak her mind and also bring up topics that can be uncomfortable or challenging (just like us) in the industry. Sex, relationships, and smoking are all topics Jessi has previously brought up and despite a shy response from idols, she remains confident and does so in an entertaining and light hearted way. Recently Jessi has made comments in support of creating gender equality in the industry. For more context check out the article HERE . " Everyone, sexy doesn't mean wearing sexy clothes like this. I wore those outfits in Korea for the water bomb festival. I can't wear these to a university festival. But the water bomb festival is perfect (for these outfits). That's why I wore them." " Men are...okay. Here's the thing. How come men can go shirtless? And show their nipples? Why can men do that but not women? Why can't women dress like this? It's the same thing. So I was like 'Whatever' and wore them. But that's only for the stage. I don't dress like this normally." (AllKpop) It's true, there are a lot of things in everyday life that men do and women "aren't allowed" to, and if they do it it becomes a big problem, but men can do it so casually! We agree with Jessi! Peer Response to "Gum" If you've been on social media you've probably seen the countless, countless videos of idols performing the "Gum" dance alongside Jessi. Some idols added a little extra junk to their trunk to match her! Which one was your favourite? NCT's Taeyong dances with Jessi to "Gum" Milli dances with Jessi to "Gum" Rain dances with Jessi to "Gum" SHINee's KEY dances with Jessi to "Gum" HyunA dances with Jessi to "Gum" TXT's Yeonjun dances with Jessi to "Gum" Members of WayV dance with Jessi to "Gum" NCT's Mark and Johnny dance with Jessi to "Gum" check the junk! TXT's Soobin and Yeonjun dance with Jessi to "Gum" These are just a few there are more! I feel like a lot of idols really enjoyed the opportunity to twerk and for good reason! The song is catchy and fun, you can see this clearly in their expressions and the energy they put into the dance! Jessi continues to shine in the K-Pop industry and rightly so. We stand with Jessi as she fights for what's right and breaks the mold of K-Pop! What did you think about "Gum"? And what do you think about Jessi challenging the industry? Comment below! #jessi #gum #kpop #korea #artist #rapper #nununana
